JULY - OCTOBER
O'DELL HOUSE MUSEUM
A Camera on the Banks
features the pictures of Frederick William Wallace, a writer and photographer
who, for a time in the 1920s, worked on schooners fishing out of Digby. During
his trips, Wallace documented the daily activities of the fishermen while they
were working, and it is these photographs (many featuring residents of Digby
and Annapolis counties) that make up the central part of this fascinating look
into the dory fishery.
The exhibit, created by the
Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in conjunction with guest curator Dr. M. Brook
Taylor of Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, has been featured at the
Maritime Museum, the Fisheries Museum in Lunenburg and the Yarmouth County
Museum. Due to its sheer size, we are co-hosting A Camera on the Banks
with the Admiral Digby Museum.
The Tent Dwellers honours
the 100th anniversary of the publication of the beloved 1908 book of the same
name by Albert Paine Bigelow. A classic tale of a trip through backwoods Nova
Scotia, centered in the area now known as Kejimkujic National Park, the book
tells the adventures of Paine, his friend Eddie (Dr. Edward Breck), and their
guides "Del the Stout" (Del Thomas) and "Charles the
Strong" (Charles Charleton). A highlight of this exhibit is the recreation
of a canopy from a coniferous forest!
The Loyalists uses the
stories of several Annapolis County families to document the arrival of the
Loyalists 225 years ago. What's fascinating about these new arrivals to Nova
Scotia in 1783 was simply the breadth of their social standing
everyone
from slaves to aristocrats came to begin a new life in a country where they
could still be loyal to the English king. Our exhibit is just one of the many
Loyalist-themed activities taking place in Nova Scotia this summer. Don't miss
it!
Annapolis goes to Sea is an
exhibit that looks at our community's long- term relationship with the sea and
the ships that sail on it. Inhabitants of our region have long relied on
vessels to carry them safely across the water, from early Mi'kmaw canoes to
Champlain's 1605 pinnace to the glorious barques of Nova Scotia's "Golden
Age of Sail". This exhibit uses the stories of local families to develop a
sense of how strong this relationship with the sea really is.

The barque Crown Jewel, built in 1868 by Abraham Young Jr. of
Young's Cove, Annapolis County, was sailed by the Troop & Son fleet out of
Saint John, New Brunswick. She was lost off the Atlantic seaboard in
1890.

This painting was found in the O'Dell House Museum during
renovations in 1967. Done on a wooden box lid, it is typical of the folk art of
Canada's Maritime Provinces.
